Heel Pain In The Morning
Do the first few steps you take out of bed in the morning feel like you are walking on broken glass? Is the location of your heel pain in the morning at the center of your heel? If you’ve answered ‘Yes’ to any of the above questions, there is a good chance that the heel pain you are suffering from is actually a repetitive strain injury called plantar fasciitis. The real problem with plantar fasciitis is that it commonly gets misdiagnosed as heel spurs. As a result of this misdiagnosis and what causes plantar fasciitis, treatment advice tends to vary which creates confusion on the patients part and only prolongs the pain and suffering.
The definition of plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the plantar fascia. The term “itis” means inflammation. Your plantar fascia is on the bottom of your foot can be described as a thin fibrous band that runs from your heel bone to the base of your toes.
What’s interesting about a plantar fasciitis injury is that when you touch the bottom of your foot, there is no sensation of tenderness or pain. It’s not until the foot is fully loaded with your body weight is when the real pain is felt. This is because the it’s the deeper layer of tissue that are affected on not the layers close to the surface of the foot.
So who and what activities are in the high risk category of developing plantar fasciitis? Basically anyone involved in repetitive activities that cause stress and strain on the foot such as:
- hair dressers
- postal workers
- factory workers
- football players
- soccer players
- construction workers
As far as treatment for plantar fasciitis goes, it all depends on who you talk too. You could honestly go to one doctor and he/she will tell you to ice and elevate your foot for a few days. Then you could walk a block away and see another doctor and he/she will tell you to apply a heat pad every other day for 10 minutes but continue on with your activities. One doctor will tell you that you have a high arch and another will tell you that you have flat feet.
That’s why plantar fasciitis and heel pain is so hard to treat and overcome. As a sufferer you get so confused by all the mixed messages, it’s hard to get the right answers that will give the heel pain relief you so desperately seek.
Well as someone who has walked a mile in your shoes and suffered from plantar fasciitis, I know exactly where you are coming from.
